Magar / Gurung and Gurkha warriors
The Magar and Gurung people live in the hilly region in the western part of Nepal in small communities among the rice paddies. The beautiful panorama of the Annapurna range can be seen from their most famous village, Ghandruk, which is also a stop on the way along the Annapurna expeditions and treks.
Their staple food is millet and maize. The sel roti is a magar festival food, a churros like dessert made from rice flour and fried in ghee (cleared butter) which can also be found in street food stalls. Another famous food is sukuti, which is buffalo meat dried in cold smoke. The sukuti can be used in a number of ways, like in curries or soups.
The gurkha are known as the bravest, fiercest and most loyal warriors. After the Anglo-Nepalese War in 1814-16, the soldiers who enlisted in the British Indian army became known as gurkhas. The gurkhas are usually of Magar or Gurkha origin. Their weapon is the khukri, which is a short sword with a curved blade, the symbol of the bravery of the Gurkha warriors.

The Sherpas are perhaps the best known ethnic group in Nepal. They live high in the mountains of eastern and central Nepal. Originally from Tibet, they crossed the mountains more than 500 years ago.
